Kathua rape and murder case: Bar Association of Jammu says agitation for CBI probe posed as communal by those who possess Kashmiri-centric mindsets

The Bar Association of Jammu, today alleged that their aggression for a CBI inquiry into the Kathua rape and murder case to make sure that the eight-year-old gets justice is being posed as communal by the ones who possess a ‘Kashmiri-centric mindset’. Coming in strongly for providing justice to the victim, the BAJ asserted that the inquiry by the crime branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police was conducted on dubious lines amidst threats pouring in and a pressure from a panel of police officers from the Kashmir Valley. One of them has already served a jail term for the alleged rape and murder of a minor.

The city of Jammu, yesterday seemed to have wrapped in a deserted mode, with all the chief shopping areas, schools, trading areas were shut, following a bandh that was called in by the Jammu High Court Bar Association (JHCBA) so as to protest against the surging illegal presence of Bangladeshi and Rohingyas nationals, while also demanding a probe by the CBI into the Kathua rape and murder case.

The eight-year-old girl belonged to nomadic Muslim Bakerwal community and so far the police have been able to arrest 8 people in the case. However, the Bar Association has strongly opposed the action alleging “targeting of minority Dogras”.

Out of those who have been arrested, are from the Hindu Ekta Manch which is a right-wing group. The BAJ President, B S Salathia stated at a press conference, “Kashmir-centric mindset tried to give our agitation for CBI probe a communal colour. They were trying to divide Jammu on communal lines. It is their conspiracy. It was portrayed as if we are against justice for the girl. We demand CBI probe for justice to the minor, and those involved should be punished”.

He further stated that from the very beginning, the BAJ has called in for an unbiased probe to punish the guilty, “and that is why we demanded a CBI probe”.

A 25-year-old Tamil Nadu youth set himself on fire following Centre’s alleged inaction to form Cauvery Management board.

The Cauvery protest in the state of Tamil Nadu has intensified over last few weeks. So much so, that the Tamilians even showed Go Back Modi posters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting the state for the defence Expo. When Prime Minister Modi landed in Chennai, the protestors were waiting with black flags and thus, he was taken by chopper to the spot of Defence Expo.

Now, it has been reported that a 25-year-old youth has set himself on fire following Centre’s alleged inaction to form Cauvery Management board as per the Supreme Court order. The incident occurred when Prime Minister was still in the state.

The man has opposed PM Modi’s visit to the state. He was also unhappy with the state AIADMK Chief minister Palaniswami. He had also scribbled this on the wall of his house. “Cauvery water is the lifeline for the people of Tamil Nadu. Yet, Chief Minister K Palaniswami and Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi have not taken any action to form a Cauvery Management Board. Also, I oppose Modi’s visit to Tamil Nadu,” the message read.

According to the police officials, the 25 years old man poured kerosene all over his body and set a fire. He has suffered 90% burn injuries. He was taken to erode government hospital immediately. However, the condition of the youth is said to be very critical.

Several protests by celebrities, civilians and activists for Cauvery Management Board have brought the state of Tamil Nadu to a standstill since few weeks. The people are demanding the Centre implement the Supreme Court’s verdict in the Cauvery dispute. The Government was given six weeks to form the Cauvery Management Board. However, Centre sought time from the Supreme Court until the Karnataka Assembly Elections.

The Apex Court, however, slammed the government for failing to implement the order and asked to form a draft Cauvery Management Board until May 3 when the next hearing in the matter is due.
