Political journey
Keshubhai Patel started as a Jana Sangh activist in the 1960s. He was one of its founding members. In 1975, the Jan Sangh-Congress (O) alliance came to power in Gujarat. Keshubhai Patel was elected to the Lok Sabha from Rajkot in 1977 after the Emergency. He later resigned and was the Agriculture Minister in Babubhai Patel’s Janata Morcha government from 1978 to 1980. He was involved in relief work after the 1979 Machhu Dam accident, which devastated Morbi.
Keshubhai travelled across the length and breadth of Gujarat to strengthen the Jana Sangh and BJP. He resisted the Emergency tooth and nail. Issues of farmer welfare were closest to his heart. Be it as MLA, MP, Minister or CM, he ensured many farmer friendly measures were passed. pic.twitter.com/qvXxG0uHvo

Keshubhai Patel won the assembly elections between 1978 and 1995 from Kalawad, Gondal and Viswadwar. In 1980, when the Jan Sangh Party was dissolved, he became the senior organizer of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He organized an election campaign against the Indian National Congress and under his leadership, the BJP won the 1995 assembly elections.
