“Monetise Assets To Increase Revenue”: Centre Tells Gram Panchayats

With an aim to make gram panchayats self-reliant, the Centre has suggested that they should consider “monetisation of assets”, under which there is a provision for leasing out properties to generate their own revenue.

The Department of Panchayati Raj, under the Ministry of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, issued an advisory on 16 August suggesting several activities for Gram Panchayats across the country. The Panchayati Raj Secretary has signed this advisory. It has a one-year agenda suggesting activities for each month.

The department has suggested for August that gram panchayats should deliberate on various means, including “monetisation of property, leasing out property and wealth tax”, to raise “their own sources of revenue”.
