“One Size Fits All Lockdown Has Brought Misery,” Says Rahul Gandhi

“It needs a “smart” upgrade, using mass testing to isolate virus hotspots and allowing businesses in other areas to gradually reopen,” Rahul said.

New Delhi| Congress leader Rahul Gandhi referred to ongoing national lockdown due to coronavirus as “one-size-fit-all” and expressed that centre’s move to arrest the growth in coronavirus cases has brought “untold misery and suffering” for millions.

“The one-size-fit-all lockdown has brought untold misery and suffering to millions of farmers, migrant laborers, daily wagers and business owners. It needs a “smart” upgrade, using mass testing to isolate virus hotspots and allowing businesses in other areas to gradually reopen,” Rahul said.

Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday extended the lockdown till 3rd May indicating that a strict lockdown will be followed till 20th April and then some restrictions in unaffected areas will be lifted after analysis.

Though during the period of 21-day lockdown, as businesses and shops were closed and continue to remain shut other than essential commodities, many have been rendered jobless and have been struggling to feed themselves and their families.

Migrants laborers who work on daily wages have been the worst hit because of the coronavirus lockdown. They are stranded in metropolitan cities with no jobs and money to survive. Many of them walked back on foot towards their town is an exodus that was observed after PM Modi had announced the lockdown last month. Those who are in the cities are dependent on the government and other civil society organizations to have food for their survival.

India has crossed 10,000 cases of coronavirus across the country. The number of casualties due to coronavirus is at 339 while more than a thousand cases have recovered/discharged from the hospitals.

PM Modi in his address on Tuesday morning said that a stricter lockdown will be followed during this week till April 20. It is assumed that thereafter some sectors of industries and services will be given relief and restrictions would be lifted.
