Rajasthan govt to take 5,000 crore bank loan to waive farm loans

Jaipur: The Vasundhara Raje led BJP government is on the back seat for arranging finance to waive farmers loans in Rajasthan. The BJP government had announced earlier that it will start providing loan-waiver certificates to farmers from Saturday.

Earlier Raje, during her last budget speech, had announced a one-time loan waiver of up to Rs 50,000 for small and marginal farmers along with a budgetary provision of Rs 2,000 crore.

Vasundhara Raje government is all set to take a bank loan worth 5000 crores in order to fulfill the promise made to the voters. As per sources, the state cooperative department is been told to take a loan, for which the state government would provide guarantees.

According to experts, the state government’s decision to waive loans of 29 lakh farmers in Rajasthan will cause the state treasury a burden close to 8,000 crores.

“The state government had assured us to give the money in installments of Rs 2,000 crore and has already given us the first tranche. We will now take a loan of Rs 5,000 crore from banks, for which the state will give guarantees,” said Ajay Singh Kilak, state cooperatives minister.

On Saturday, 17,000 farmers would be handed over the certificates while on Monday, 16,500 farmers would be given the same. From June 1 onwards, camps would be held at the village level. It may prove difficult as the government is not prepared,” added Kilak.

The State government has announced that to hold camps on May 26 and 28 at gramin sewa sehakari samitis across the state to start distribution of loan-waiver certificates to select farmers. This has resulted in an added burden as the state cooperative department is already falling short of RS 1000 crore.
