Sushma Swaraj on her way to China for a meeting held by Shanghai Cooperation Organisation

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj left for a five-day visit to China and Mongolia on Saturday.

Swaraj is travelling to China where she will participate in the meeting of foreign ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). Her visit to China comes in the backdrop of the efforts made by both India and China to move past the tensions which rose out of last year’s Doklam standoff.

Foreign minister Sushma Swaraj’s visit to China on Saturday is expected to prepare the ground for a possible trip by PM Narendra Modi to China next month, people familiar with the development suspected.

“We believe Swaraj’s visit will further enhance political trust between the two countries and elevate the China-India strategic cooperation partnership,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying.

She is also expected to hold bilateral talks with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.
