BHU students protest as professor guilty of sexual harassment returns

The students demanded immediate dismissal of Professor SK Choubey of the Department of Zoology in BHU who was guilty of sexual harassment.

Varanasi| Students of the Science Department began a sit-in protest at the BHU gate in Varanasi late Saturday evening as the university saw a return of a professor guilty of sexual harassment. The students demanded immediate dismissal of Professor Shail Kumar Choubey of the Department of Zoology in BHU. The guilty professor returned to the University after his suspension was revoked. Raising slogans and carrying placards, the students shouted slogans against the university administration.  The female students have accused the university administration of saving the professor. Chief Proctor Prof. OP Rai tried to pacify the students, but they were adamant on calling the vice-chancellor till late night.

The students sitting on the dharna said that during the Pune tour, Professor Choubey had made indecent remarks along with passing obscene comments. “Even after being found guilty in this case, the university administration is trying to save him, it is beyond comprehension,” one of the protesting student said.  The students have also submitted a written complaint.

What happened?

In October 2018, the students of Zoology Department were taken to Pune on an educational tour. After returning from the tour, the students had complained to the university administration accusing Professor Chaubey of sexually harassing them. He was then suspended and banned from going out until the investigation was conducted. The inquiry committee was constituted and the matter was investigated from 25 October 2018 to 30 November 2018.

Committee found him guilty:

The committee recorded the statements of the students as well as departmental teachers and submitted the report to the Vice-Chancellor. In the report, the inquiry committee had justified the allegations of the female students. In the meeting of the Executive Council held in June 2019, based on the report of the committee, the professor was warned that in future he will not go on any such tour. Also, he will not be given any kind of post in future.
