Yogi’s U-Turn: No Govt Permission Required For Hiring Workers From UP

Earlier, CM Yogi Adityanath said states that want to employ workers from UP will first have to seek approval from the UP government.

Lucknow| Two days ago Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath said other states will need permission from Uttar Pradesh for engaging its workers.

On Sunday, UP CM also declared that the state government has decided to set up a Migration Commission for the hiring of migrant workers in the state. The manner of skill mapping of these migrant workers already being done in UP, Yogi said.

On Tuesday, his government said that it would not incorporate, in the migration commission bye-laws, the ‘prior permission’ clause for states seeking to hire workers from UP.

UP government also said it was working on modalities to set up the commission to provide employment and social security to migrant workers returning to the state. It has named the migration commission as the ‘Kamgar/shramik (sewajojan and rozgar) kalyan ayog (Workers/labourers employment welfare commission).

About 26 lakh migrants have already returned to the state and an exercise to map their skills is being carried out to help them get jobs.

On Tuesday, Adityanath discussed the modalities for setting up the commission and told his officers to complete the skill mapping exercise in 15 days.

The exodus of migrant workers began from the day lockdown was imposed in March and still continues. Lakhs of migrants started to walk hundreds of kilometres towards their homes. Some of them were killed by road or train accidents. Some died due to hunger.

Migrant workers are the worst affected people in India due to lack of transport facilities, money, food and assistance from governments all over the country.

The state of Uttar Pradesh has over 6,000 cases and has recorded 150 fatalities.
