Even when the chorus is rising for the reservation to Maratha and Dhangar communities in Maharashtra, the Congress has raked up a demand for the immediate restoration of quota for the Muslim community in education. The Congress-NCP government had provided 5% reservation to the Muslim community in government jobs and education but the Bombay High Court had scrapped the reservation in government jobs but had upheld it in education. However, it was not resorted by the BJP led government or the Shiv Sena led Maha Vikas Aghadi government since then despite repeated demands.
The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee working president Naseem Khan held the meeting of the party leaders and experts and thinkers from the Muslim community demanding the immediate restoration of the reservation.
Khan alleged that the BJP government and its leaders are misleading that reservation can not be given on the basis of religion, but everyone in this state knows that reservation was given to the Muslim community on the basis of backwardness and not in the name of religion and the decisions taken regarding reservation were based on backwardness. ββThe Bombay High Court upheld the decision taken by the Congress led government and allowed to continue the reservation on the basis of equity and within the framework of the Constitution in the education sector,ββ he noted.
Khan said if the MahaYuti government does not restore the quota for Muslim community in education sector on the basis of backwardness there would be a massive outrage across the state.
Further, Khan made a strong case for conducting the caste based census in Maharashtra as done in Bihar. He welcomed the statement made by the Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in support of the caste based census in the state.
