Congress stakes claim to form government in Goa; writes to Governor

Panaji | The Congress party today staking claim to form the government in Goa has written to Governor Mridula Sinha to dismiss the Manohar Parrikar led BJP government.

In a letter to the governor Mridula Sinha, the Congress party asked to dismiss BJP-led govt stating that the government is in “minority” and demanded to call single-largest party i.e Congress to form govt. The letter further stated that any attempt to bring Goa under President’s rule will be illegal and the Congress party will challenge such decision.

In the February 2017 assembly election, the Congress party emerged as the single largest party with 17 MLAs but failed to form the government against BJP as it formed the government under the leadership of Manohar Parrikar who was then the defence minister. Earlier in October 2017, the Congress party had staked claimed for the government but its request of floor test was rejected by the governor. 3 Congress MLAs later changed their sides and joined the BJP.

The Congress party again in February 2019 became the single largest party after the demise of BJP MLA Francis D’Souza. The Congress party’s claim to form the government has come at the time when BJP MLA Pandurang Madkaikar is unwell after the stroke attack he faced last year along with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar deteriorating health condition.

The Goa legislative assembly has a strength of 37 MLAs out of which the Congress party has 14 MLAs while the BJP has 14 MLAs including Parrikar and Madkaikar along with the support of 3 MLAs from Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, the Goa Forward Party and three independents.
