New Delhi | The Election Commision on Thursday denied the possibility of conducting simultaneous assembly election with Lok Sabha election.
According to a news agency PTI, Chief Election Commissioner OP Rawat said the there is no chance at all of holding simultaneous elections without a “legal framework” in place. ‘One Nation-One Election’ i.e simultaneous assembly and the Parliamentary election is one of the main agenda of the current Narendra Modi government.
Earlier BJP president Amit Shah wrote an 8-page letter to the Election commission stating that the opposition to simultaneous elections seems to be politically motivated. The union government also stated that holding polls at the national and state levels will cut down on the cost of elections in terms of both time and money. The Law commision in the paper submitted to the Election Commission of India recommended about holding the Lok Sabha and assembly polls in two phases beginning 2019.
Opposition parties including Congress, Trinamool Congress, AAP, DMK, Telugu Desam Party, Left parties and the JD(S) have opposed the proposal of simultaneous election questioning its feasibility and arguing that it would be against federal principles.
