Framed for being Kashmiri Muslims, says family of couple arrested for ISIS links

The family members of a Kashmiri couple arrested in Indian capital over alleged ISIS links, on Monday rubbished the claims of Delhi Police.

New Delhi| The family of the Kashmiri couple arrested on Sunday from south Delhi for alleged links with the Islamic State-Khorasan Province (ISKP) and instigating protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act(CAA) said on Monday said that the two are being framed.

Jahanzaib Sami and his wife Hina Bashir Beigh, both in their late 30s and residents of Srinagar, were detained from their rented home in Okhla Vihar on Sunday and booked for sedition and promoting enmity between different communities under Sections 124A and 153A of the Indian Penal Code, and under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), police officials said.

Jahanzaib Sami Wani and his wife Hina Bashir Beg were rounded by the sleuths of special cell of Delhi Police on Sunday from their rented accommodation in Jamia Nagar locality of southeast Delhi.

A resident of Shivpora, Sami was working as a project manager with the UK based IT company. He got married to Hina in October last and moved to Delhi for work as the Valley was reeling under communication clampdown. Hina Bashir Beigh is an MBA in finance and marketing. Samiā€™s father owns a manufacturing unit in Kashmir while his mother is a retired teacher.

At their home in Shivpora, a stoneā€™s throw away from the largest army cantonment in Valley, the family of the couple is in a state of shock. Relatives and neighbours come in flocks to console the family shattered by the news of the arrest.

ā€œMy brother has no links with any organisation. You can check his profile with the Jammu and Kashmir Police,ā€ Samiā€™s sister Sehrish told Kashmir Observer.

She says her brother was career oriented and he had no interest in whatever was happening in Kashmir.

Sami is survived by his parents and a sister. His father is a businessman and mother a retired teacher. Sehrish is a Law student.

Wani and Beg, both 36, had married on October 6 last year. Kashmir was still under lockdown. After the Centre stripped the state of special status under Article 370 and split it into two Union Territories on August 5, it had placed severe restrictions on the Valley, including a communications blackout. An internet shutdown imposed on August 5 dragged on for months. According to Sami, the couple would not have been in Delhi had it not been for the internet shutdown.
