Maharashtra might be divided like J&K: Raj Thackeray on Govt’s Kashmir move

The statement of Raj Thackeray has come days after he hailed the Modi govt’s decision of abrogating Article 370. Tweeting about the same, he had called it an exceptional decision.

Mumbai| Several opposition leaders and parties have already criticised the Modi govt for clampdown in Kashmir. Adding to the list is Maharashtra Navanirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray. On Friday, Raj Thackeray expressed fear that Modi govt may divide Maharashtra the way Jammu and Kashmir were divided. He was addressing his party workers here.

Raj Thackeray said that the BJP govt can use force to divide Maharashtra the way it did in Jammu and Kashmir. He said, “In Kashmir, Army and police personnel are deployed outside the residences of the people. Internet, cell phone, television services there stand snapped…everything is closed down there. Today it’s Kashmir, tomorrow it might be Vidarbha, maybe Mumbai a day later.” “Tomorrow, those holding sten guns may stand outside your homes. Maharashtra will be divided forcibly, without thinking about you,” he added.

Raj Thackeray was referring to Modi govt’s decision to lock down the valley leaders in a house arrest ahead of the bills being presented in the parliament. The bills proposed abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two separate Union Territories- J&K and Ladakh.

On Monday, the government imposed section 144 in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir including Srinagar. The mobile internet and landline were also cut-off. Govt said that this was done as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incident as Govt introduced a bill to abrogate Article 370 and split J&K into two Union territories. After the bills were passed in both the houses of parliament, NSA Ajit Doval was also seen visiting various parts of Kashmir to take stock of the situation.

Interestingly, Raj Thackeray’s statement has come days after he hailed the Modi govt’s decision of abrogating Article 370. Tweeting about the same, he had noted, “After a long time, the Central Govt makes an exceptional decision!”
