Supreme Court Orders the Delhi HC to List Hate Speech Cases on Friday

Earlier the Delhi High Court had given a period of 4 weeks to Centre to file counter-affidavit in response to a plea seeking registration of FIRs against politicians for making inciting statements.

Delhi| The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Delhi High Court to list all the petitions on Friday, filed by Delhi Riots victims asking to register FIRs against BJP leaders for the hate speeches delivered by them. SC made the order ‘in the interest of the justice’, rejecting the centre’s request for more time to file a response.

“We are of the view that in the interest of justice, the cases be listed before the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on Friday… We request the High Court to deal with these cases expeditiously,” CJI Bobde said while hearing the plea of the victims of violence.

10 petitions were filed by the victims of violence that took place in Delhi last week seeking registration of FIRs against the BJP leader who delivered hate speeches. BJP leaders Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur and Parvesh Verma had come under heavy fire for their speeches. The victims argued that speeches delivered by these leaders escalated the tensions and played an important role in leading the situation to riots which too around 47 lives.
