Watch: “God Said You Decide,” Says Digambar Kamat On Switching To BJP

Two years later, Kamat became  Chief minister of Goa. Kamat has also served as the state’s minister for power, urban development, mines, and art and culture.

As Rahul Gandhi completes a week of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, eight MLAs of the Indian National Congress (INC) in Goa have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday, 14 September, Goa Chief Minister and BJP leader Pramod Sawant said.

The eight MLAs, who swiched to the safrron party are Digambar Kamat, Michael Lobo, Delilah Lobo, Rajesh Phaldesai, Kedar Naik, Sankalp Amonkar, Aleixo Sequeira and Rudolf Fernandes.

Earlier in February, prior to the assembly elections, all candidates from the Congress-Goa Forward alliance in Goa had taken oath on the Constitution to not defect or resign from the party in the course of their five-year term as legislators, if elected.

When former Goa CM Digambar Kamat, was asked about his oath by a reporter during his interaction with the media, Kamat said that he believes in God and it is true that they had taken an oath not to leave Congress, ahead of Polls, but he again went to God & asked about new decision & God agreed, therefore, he left Congress and joined BJP.

 

Digambar Kamat, the most senior of the 11 Congress MLAs in Goa. Kamat is a seven-time MLA from Margao, his fortress, Kamat has switched between the Congress and the BJP throughout his career. His journey began in the Congress but he joined the BJP in 1994. The following year, he became MLA for the first time.

In 2005, he reportedly brought down the Manohar Parrikar-led BJP government before returning to Congress. Two years later, Kamat became  Chief minister of Goa. Kamat has also served as the state’s minister for power, urban development, mines, and art and culture.
