Mumbai: Senior IPS officer Vivek Phansalkar has been appointed as the new Mumbai police commissioner.

A 1989-batch IPS officer, Vivek Phansalkar was serving as the DG and MD of the Police Housing and Welfare Corporation, before his appointment as the Mumbai police commissioner.

He will succeed incumbent commissioner of police Sanjay Pandey who is retiring on Thursday.

Vivek Phansalkar had also served Maharashtra Police in various key capacities including Thane commissioner of police and Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad chief.

Mr. Sanjay Pandey was appointed as the commissioner on February 19. He was known for his interactions with the media.

According to sources, Devendra Fadnavis is likely to be sworn in as the new Chief Minister on Friday. 

Mumbai: On Wednesday late evening Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, in an emotional address to the citizens of Maharashtra, resigned as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Thackeray also announced his resignation as a member of the legislative council. Thackeray resolved to never hold any political post in the future and will head Shiv Sena.

Soon after MrThackeray stepped down, Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrakant Patil said party colleagues Devendra Fadnavis and rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde will take a call on the next court of action. The state BJP unit has asked all its MLAs to gather in Mumbai. Patil has also asked the rebel Shiv Sena MLAs not to come to Mumbai today, and to arrive only on the day of oath-taking.

Meanwhile, Senior leaders in the BJP say Eknath Shinde and his followers maintain they are Balasaheb Thackeray’s Shiv Sainiks.

According to sources, the Devendra Fadnvanis Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra is likely to be sworn in as the new Chief Minister on Friday.

The rifts between the BJP and Shiv Sena in 2020 after the Maharashtra Assembly elections were on the 50-50 power-sharing formula.

Moreover, Devendra fadnavis on the first day after being named leader of the opposition of the house had claimed “The projects we started will eventually be integrated by us.’
