In a shocking development today, micro-blogging platform Twitter has withheld Twitter accounts of several Indians, organizations and opposition leaders. Most of them are critic of the ruling party, the Modi govt and its policies. When we tried to access the accounts it simply shows this message.
Those individuals or entities whose twitter account has been withheld include, Journalism portal that Caravan, Kisan Ekta Morcha body that has been organising the protests against the farm laws in Delhi, blogger and socio-political activist Hansraj Meena, actor Sushant Singh, activist Sanjukta Basu etc. CPI(M)’s Puducherry wing, and CPIM leader Mohammed Salim’s Twitter handle has also been withheld in India in response to a legal demand.
AAP leader Preeti Sharma menon, who often takes it to Twitter to voice her opinion, her account has been withheld too. Apart from menon several other AAP members from Punjab and Maharashtra faced similar action from Twitter.
This sudden action over a mass scale which has withheld some of the prominent Twitter accounts In India is being termed as a clampdown on Free Speech.
Joining us on this discussion is AAP national executive member and Mumbai Prabhari Preeti Sharma Menon.
