Breaking: SC adjourns Ayodhya dispute hearing till 29 January; will constitute new bench

New Delhi | The Supreme Court on Thursday adjourned the hearing in the RamJanmabhoomi-Barbri Masjid Ayodhya dispute till January 29.

The hearing of the matter got adjourned as judge UU Lalit rescued himself from hearing the case after advocate Rajeev Dhavan pointed out that Justice UU Lalit had appeared for Kalyan Singh in the matter. Informing the bench about Justice UU Lalit involvement in the case, advocate Rajeev Dhavan said,”I am bringing it to Your Lordships notice though we don’t have objection to him hearing the matter. It is entirely upto Your Lordships.”

TheSupreme Court Registry has informed the CJI that 120 issues have been framed and 88 witnesses have been examined. The judgment runs into 8500 plus typed pages. Supreme Court registry will need to give a report on by when will all documents be translated and the case be ready for hearing.

The Ayodhya title dispute belongs to rights of over 2.7 acres of land on which the Babri Masjid stood before it was demolished on December 6, 1992. The Allahabad High Court in its 2010 verdict had distributed 2.77-acre land equally among the three parties — the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla.
