Union Home Minister Amit Shah told Suvendu Adhikari that CAA will be implemented after the COVID vaccination drive gets complete.

Mumbai: Union Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday announced that once the COVID vaccination drive is over CAA will be implemented. The Citizenship Amendment Act seeks to grant citizenship to illegal migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians. The government launched the precautionary dose vaccination in April and it is expected to be completed in nine months.

Shah gave the assurance to Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly,  when he met him in the Parliament on Tuesday to discuss issues related to the functioning of the BJP in West Bengal, as well as organizational issues. After the meeting, Adhikari said he was informed by the Home Secretary that the central government will proceed with the long-awaited implementation of CAA once the third dose of Covid vaccination is completed.

Adhikari, who met Shah, also raised other issues related to the BJP’s ongoing political struggle with the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which governs West Bengal. Adhikari said he gave a list of 100 TMC leaders to crack down on corruption.

The CAA was adopted by Parliament on December 11, 2019 and notified the following day. At the time, the opposition and the people protested against the application of the bill. The central government has yet to formulate rules for the law, although there have been vocal calls from various sides, including northeastern states.
