The Assam Education Minister also said that these schools will be merged or amalgamated with neighboring schools.

Guwahati: The Assam government has decided to shut down 34 government-run schools in the state after none of their students passed this year’s High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) or Class 10 examinations.
According to the Assam Secondary Education Department, more than 500 students from these schools appeared in the HSLC examination this year conducted by the Board of Secondary Education Assam (SEBA), but none of them passed the examination. Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Assam Education Minister said that it is meaningless to spend taxpayer money on these schools with zero success rate.

The Assam Education Minister also said that there are many other schools in the state where the enrolment of students is very low.
“If there are no students, how the school will survive, in a few schools, there are only 2-3 students. The primary duty of schools is to impart education. If a school’s result in the HSLC examination is zero, then it is better not to have such a school. The government can’t spend taxpayer’s money for zero results,” Dr. Ranoj Pegu said.

The Assam Education Minister also said that these schools will be merged or amalgamated with neighboring schools.

“And for this merging process, some schools will be shut down. We will try to move the new school forward with a new look. It is a continuous process, there are around 2000-2500 such proposals in the state and we are examining it and we are trying our best to keep these schools,” the Assam Education Minister said.
According to the Assam Secondary Education Department, recently the department has received proposals and data from more than 290 government-run schools in the state where enrollment of students is very low and results are also not satisfactory.

In June, the Assam Secondary Education Department had served show cause notice to 102 state-run schools for poor results of their students in this year’s High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) or Class 10 examination.

To Pakistan and Afghanistan deal with recent heavy flooding date, the UN team has mobilized 7 million US dollars to respond to the floods and has provided 1,100 metric tons of food rations, therapeutic feed and nutritional supplements,” said Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Addressing a press briefing, Dujarric said a response plan is being finalized to coordinate the joint response and call for further resources, following a rapid assessment.

In Afghanistan, heavy rains and flash floods over the past week have impacted several provinces, affecting more than 8,200 families.

Between August 16 and 21, flash floods killed 63 people and injured 115 others, including women and children. Nearly 3,400 homes are estimated to have been damaged or destroyed.

In the wake of massive floods across Pakistan, the Shehbaz Sharif government has launched an international appeal seeking funds for relief and rehabilitation of flood-hit people across the country.

This decision to reach out to the world was made on Tuesday during an emergency meeting to reassess the damage caused by floods and to apprise donors of the magnitude of the crisis, the Dawn newspaper reported.

During the urgent meeting, the Pak PM also appealed to the nation to extend help to the flood-stricken people as the government needs additional funds to rehabilitate the flood victims.

“The current relief operation needs Pkr 80 billion and hundreds of billions of rupees also required to overcome the losses as well as for rehabilitation of the victims,” the Pakistan prime minister said in a video message.

Divulging the details of the crisis, Shehbaz said the government was distributing Pkr 37.2 billion as cash relief whereas funds to the tune of Pkr 5 billion had “immediately” been to accelerate the rescue efforts.
