Bids Invited To Construct Mumbai Station Of Bullet Train

Bullet Train

As part of the bullet train project, the train will be run between Ahmedabad -Mumbai on a high-speed rail corridor at a speed of 320 kmph, covering a distance of 508 km across 12 stations.

New Delhi: The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) on Friday invited bids for the design and construction of an underground station at Mumbaiโ€™s Bandra Kurla Complex and a tunnel for the bullet train project, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said.

โ€œBids invited for design and construction of Mumbai underground station and tunnels for Bullet Train,โ€ Mr. Vaishnaw said.

As part of the bullet train project, the train will be run between Ahmedabad -Mumbai on a high-speed rail corridor at a speed of 320 kmph, covering a distance of 508 km across 12 stations.

This is the first set of bids invited after the Shine-Fadnavis government was formed in Maharashtra. The new government has given the green flag to the project, which remained inactive during the previous Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government.

While the railway ministerโ€™s tweet indicated that there were multiple tunnels, the NHSRCL clarified that there is only one 467-meter cut and cover tunnel and a 66-meter ventilation shaft in the tender package. This shaft will also be used for taking out the tunnel boring machine (retrieval shaft).

The train is expected to reduce the travel time to about three hours from the current six hours between the two cities.

The cost for the superfast train, which will be shared between the state and central government is  โ‚น1.08 lakh crore, out of which, the Central government will pay โ‚น10,000 crore to the NHSRCL, and the two states involved โ€“ Gujarat and Maharashtra โ€“ will pay โ‚น5,000 crores each and the rest is to be paid by Japan through a loan at 0.1% interest, as per the shareholding pattern.

Mr. Vaishnaw has said that Indian might gets its first operational bullet train by the year 2026.

Calcutta HC Cancels 2016 Teachersโ€™ Recruitment Due To Scam

Zaina Afzal Kutty

On Monday, the Calcutta High Court, in a significant blow to the West Bengal government, cancelled the 2016 recruitment panel for school teachers constituted by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC), nullifying nearly 24,000 job appointments. The courtโ€™s order comes in the wake of the stateโ€™s highly publicized teachersโ€™ recruitment scam.

During the hearing, a division bench comprising Justices Debangsu Basak and Md Shabbar Rashidi ruled that illegally recruited teachers must return their salaries within four weeks. The district magistrates have been tasked with collecting the money from these teachers, who were appointed through an improper process using blank OMR sheets.

The cancelled recruitment panel includes all teaching and non-teaching staff appointments made through the WBSSCโ€™s 2016 entrance examination for various state-government-sponsored and aided schools across West Bengal.

In a significant directive, the bench has ordered the re-evaluation of as many as 23 lakh OMR sheets from the recruitment entrance exam conducted in 2016. It also rejected requests for a stay on the order and instructed the CBI to undertake further investigations into the appointment process, submitting a report within three months.

The WBSSC has been directed to initiate fresh recruitment proceedings to fill vacant positions.

The 2016 State Level Selection Test (SLST) conducted by the WBSSC had attracted over 23 lakh candidates vying for over 24,000 vacant posts across the state. Hundreds of job aspirants awaiting the verdict outside the court premises rejoiced upon hearing the cancellation order.

The case has its roots in allegations of irregularities and corruption in the teachersโ€™ recruitment process, which led to a CBI probe on the orders of the Calcutta High Court. The federal agency even arrested former state Education Minister Partha Chatterjee in 2022 for his alleged links to the scam.

With the entire 2016 panel now invalid, the Calcutta High Courtโ€™s judgment delivers a significant blow to the West Bengal government and the WBSSC, which now face the mammoth task of re-conducting the recruitment process transparently to fill the thousands of vacant teaching positions across state schools.
