MUMBAI| On Wednesday, cyclone Amphan has killed at least 12 people in West Bengal. It is the worst storm over the Bay of Bengal ever.
The strong cyclone ravaged thousands of homes, leaving officials grappling to mount relief efforts amid the COVID-19 crisis. Bengal took the brunt of Cyclone Amphan, which barreled into the coast with gusting winds of up to 185 km per hour.
West Bengal CM said the impact of Amphan was worse than the coronavirus pandemic and claimed damages due to the cyclone could be in the region of Rs 1 lakh crore. The government had shifted over five lakh people in Bengal and over one lakh in Odisha.
CM Mamata Banerjee said, “Area after area has been ruined.”
The Kolkata airport, which remains shut, was left flooded and many structures within damaged. Most of the city and its neighbouring districts have been without electricity for 17 hours.
